I just read a line which I liked about GK Chesterton by Paul Johnson – “No man ever worked harder to convey truth and, at the same time, to avoid acquiring and transmitting facts.”
Viewed through Father Brown’s character’s total opposition to that of Sherlock Holmes this makes some sense. Knowledge doesn’t have to always depend on agreeable facts, but instead on something that is much deeper, hard to agree on, or even to admit.
